Why teams are redesigning travel to protect performance

From football to basketball, teams are rethinking how they travel - not for comfort, but for performance

Travel has always been part of sport.

But as schedules become more demanding and competitions more global, its impact on performance is being taken more seriously than ever.

Across elite sport, teams are redesigning how athletes move between locations - not just where they go, but how and when they get there.

The focus is no longer logistics. It’s performance.

In leagues like the NBA and Premier League, where teams regularly travel long distances, even small disruptions can affect preparation and execution.

That has led to more structured travel strategies.

Teams are adjusting flight times, arrival windows and training schedules to minimise disruption and maintain consistency.

Sports scientist Dr Shona Halson has highlighted how travel can affect multiple aspects of performance.

"Travel can disrupt routines, impact physical readiness and affect decision-making," she said in discussions around athlete preparation.

Managing those factors has become a priority.

Some teams now travel earlier to allow for adaptation. Others adjust training intensity around travel days to reduce load.

There is also greater emphasis on maintaining routine.

Meals, hydration and movement are carefully planned to keep athletes as close as possible to their normal schedule.

For athletes, the difference can be subtle - but significant.

Former England footballer Gary Neville has spoken about how preparation away from matches can influence performance.

"The small details make a big difference," he said. "You notice it when you’re not quite right."

That’s what teams are trying to eliminate.

The aim isn’t to make travel easy. It’s to make it irrelevant.

Because in modern sport, performance isn’t just shaped by what happens in training or competition.

It’s shaped by everything around it.
